Broadening Horizons: The Asia Pacific Exchange Program is Officially Launched

Weber Shandwick offices across Asia Pacific are getting ready to expand their cultural insights as they participate or host colleagues from around the region. In July, Weber Shandwick launched the Asia Pacific Exchange Program, a new regional initiative which will give colleagues a taste for a different market and culture as well as help to further their experience and skills.

This year’s winners, who were nominated by their managing directors based on business rationale and individual merit, have the opportunity to travel to another office in Asia Pacific for at least two weeks.

The program has already proven to be a valuable experience. Nea Ferrier, an account supervisor in the Hong Kong corporate and technology team has already participated in the program and traveled to Japan: "I have worked "virtually" with a number of Japanese colleagues over the last couple of years so the chance to meet them face-to-face was wonderful. The exchange helped me gain a deeper understanding of the Japanese market as well as differences and similarities in the challenges and opportunities that we all face as PR professionals."

The program also highlights the agency’s commitment to supporting the communities we work in.

The judges reported that their decision was not an easy one, receiving entries about pro bono efforts supporting a range of worthy causes. On behalf of the network, Weber Shandwick will make a financial contribution to each of the below pro bono clients.

The winning campaigns are:
Weber Shandwick and IPG colleagues built a house for a family on the Island on Batam, Indonesia as part of the Habitat for Humanity program.
Habitat for Humanity, Singapore – Habitat for Humanity, a global non-profit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty and homelessness, asked our Singapore office to help them achieve a higher level of volunteer participation, increase corporate sponsorship and expand outreach to a wider public. After conducting extensive research on four key audiences and articulating the value propositions Habitat had to offer each, the Weber Shandwick team developed a full range of online and offline information materials targeted for each audience. With these tools in hand, Habitat formed eight Global Village teams in the first half of 2005 and is scheduled to send out five teams by the end of the year.
A global healthcare team from Weber Shandwick created a campaign to support global awareness of osteoporosis
International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) – A global healthcare team from multiple Weber Shandwick offices on three continents created a campaign to support global awareness and encourage policymakers to promote greater access to screening for the prevention of osteoporosis, a devastating bone disease that affects millions of people worldwide. To meet the IOF’s objectives, the Weber Shandwick team created a media toolkit for national osteoporosis organizations, leveraged World Osteoporosis Day activities around the world, launched a new advertising campaign in Asia and brought together osteoporosis experts with 70 stakeholders from 20 European countries. The global campaign reached more than 50 million households and significantly increased the number of people requesting preventative screening for osteoporosis.
Weber Shandwick’s Chicago office launched a new charter school designed to address childhood obesity and the need for quality education in inner city schools.
Namaste Charter School – Weber Shandwick’s Chicago office has applied its expertise in health and nutrition issues to launch a new charter school designed to address two of the biggest health and education issues today – childhood obesity and the need for quality education in inner city schools. The objectives of the campaign for the Namaste Charter School were to drive student enrollment and secure funding from prospective donors. Our Chicago team created a differentiated identity highlighting the school’s emphasis on physical fitness and nutrition, produced marketing materials for potential students/families and donors and increased awareness through substantial coverage in top national and local media outlets. These efforts helped the Namaste school exceed its enrollment target and double its year-one fundraising goal.

The Making a Difference program was launched in 2004 in order to bring together the diverse community relations and pro bono initiatives of the network.

Asia Pacific Leadership Award Winners

The 2004 Leadership Award winners

In September, 18 Weber Shandwick employees together with 19 other IPG colleagues, spent two and a half days on the island of Phuket, Thailand for the 2005 Leadership Awards Retreat.

The Asia Pacific Leadership Awards recognize and reward selected IPG employees at all levels, who have made a meaningful contribution towards the collective success of the company. The strict selection criterion involves evaluating which colleagues exemplify the ethos of leadership in their working environment. The award entrants write down their contribution according to the following categories: client leadership; market leadership; workplace leadership; and operational leadership.

The WeberWorks Weekly, was presented at the retreat which showed a “day-in-the-life” of someone at Weber Shandwick.

One of the 2005 winners, Catherine Yuen from Weber Shandwick in Hong Kong, found the experience extremely rewarding, "The retreat was a fantastic opportunity to meet other people in our network. We also had a chance to get to know those who work for the other IPG brands," said Catherine.

The retreat involved a welcome dinner and a series of creative presentations about each brand. Weber Shandwick’s presentation was created by Barkha Pande, an account supervisor from the Singapore office. Barkha presented the WeberWorks Weekly, a newspaper detailing a "day-in-the-life" of someone at Weber Shandwick.

There were also outdoor team building exercises and case study presentations which involved teams made up of people from different brands working together on a single project.

"It was interesting and worthwhile to work with people with totally different perspectives and ideas," said Catherine. "It was also a lot of fun!"
